Prof. James Goodwin

“Thought Leader, Author and International Speaker”

A graduate of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, he served as an infantry officer in the British Army, both Regular and Reserve. He was a Cold War soldier, trained to fight the Russian Army and their Warsaw Pact allies. He was the author of a 2022 article in the Daily Telegraph, “How to defeat the Russian Army’.  Decorated by HM Queen Elizabeth II for meritorious service and a member of the Army International Shooting Team.

Dr Goodwin has real leadership experience, having led soldiers in various theatres, including Germany, the Near East, North America and the Falkland Islands.  He understands at a practical level what it takes to be a leader. He was a member of the British Army officer selection board and trained undergraduates in the ROTC of Exeter University.

On leaving the regular Army, he studied for a master’s in Human Biology at Loughborough and then for a PhD in Medical Physiology in Professor Sir John Tooke’s department at the University of Exeter Medical School. He was appointed Head of Research at the London charity Help the Aged in 2002, Director of Research at Age UK in 2009 and then Chief Scientist until September 2018.

Currently, Director of Science and Research at the Brain Health Network, London, an online platform for brain health advice.

When not writing and speaking, Dr Goodwin keeps fit, practices the martial arts and enjoys country life on Dartmoor, Devonshire – England’s last true wilderness area
